The Church-Wellesley Business Improvement Area received a permit from the City of Toronto to create a pedestrian-only area on Church Street, between Wellesley Street and Alexander Street. From June 19 to August 21, 2026 Church Street was closed to motor vehicle traffic while remaining open to pedestrians.

The City is monitoring the impacts and outcomes of the Pedestrianization Pilot. Public engagement with residents, visitors and businesses took place in summer 2026. Findings will be incorporated into a report expected in early 2027.
